Climate Action

We are committed to upholding the highest environmental and sustainability standards across our global operations. We maintain our ISO 14001 accreditation for Environmental Management in the UK, US, and Asia, driving continual improvement through robust policies, procedures, and systems. In the UK, we have retained our ISO 20121 accreditation for Sustainable Event Management, with a focus on expanding the number of live events certified under this standard each year.
We use our internal Global Climate Action Dashboard to track the progress of our environmental commitments by country - including progress of waste and energy reduction targets, the emissions measurement project work, technology improvements, and travel reduction targets.
Measuring & managing our global emissions
We continue to partner with UN-backed Normative to measure our global emissions, providing the data in order for us to set reduction targets - including net zero 2050 - and implement effective climate action strategies. With Normative, we now have a bank of data that enables us to measure and benchmark progress.
We also continue to be guided by our global environmental policy and its targets, alongside global procurement and sustainable travel policies, while our suppliers around the world are subject to our global supplier code of conduct.
Our net zero commitment
We are still committed to working towards global net zero emissions by 2050. This means reducing absolute emissions wherever possible, driving supplier engagement, and supporting the transition to lower‑carbon products, services, and events across all markets in which we operate.

Renewable energy and office improvements
Our UK and German offices continue to be powered by renewable energy. We targeted a 10% year‑on‑year reduction for our UK and US businesses. In the UK we reduced office energy by 4%. The US remained flat, due to an increase in office attendance by our colleagues. Our offices in Asia reduced electricity consumption by 13% year-on-year, and Germany reduced energy by 4%.
Responsible travel
Business travel is a material contributor to our Scope 3 footprint. We limit air travel to trips that are strictly necessary, requiring director approval, and prioritise virtual meetings, hybrid conferencing, and lower‑carbon transport modes wherever feasible.
Our global emissions performance
From our 2023 measurement to 2024 measurement, total emissions fell by 127 tCO2e (‑1%):*
- Scope 1 global emissions decreased by 22%
- Scope 2 global emissions decreased by 23%In the UK Scope 2 emissions reduced by almost 100%, due to reporting on a full year of renewable energy, energy improvements in our head office, and moving to Electric VehiclesIn Asia our Scope 2 emissions reduced by 23%
- Scope 3 emissions remained broadly static year‑on‑yearIn Germany our Scope 3 emissions reduced by 18%The UK’s Scope 3 emissions fell by 9%
Scope 3 dominates our footprint, accounting for 98% of Haymarket’s total emissions, underscoring the importance of supply‑chain engagement, travel policy, and product choices:
- Employee commuting emissions increased by 9% driven by an increase in the number of days in our global offices
- Business travel emissions increased by 54% year‑on‑year, driven by an increase in travel by the majority of offices post-Covid. However, in the UK, we reduced the number of flights taken by 39% year-on-year
- Emissions from printed products account for 30% of total global emissions: 4,470 tCO2e in FY2023/24, compared with 29% (4,490 tCO2e) in FY2022/23
*Restated baseline: our previously reported FY2022/23 footprint has been updated from 14,934 tCO2e to 15,307 tCO2e following the inclusion of additional print issues that were not captured in the original dataset. This restatement ensures a more accurate year‑on‑year comparison, and demonstrates our commitment to reporting the most accurate figures we can.
Print emissions:
Globally, we reduced the number of print issues by 1.5 million copies, yet print‑related emissions fell by only 1%. Regionally, emissions declined in the US, Germany, and Asia; remained flat in India; and rose in the UK, offsetting reductions elsewhere.

What actions are we taking now?
- Improving supplier data: we request consistent, Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions data from key suppliers, especially printers, venues, and logistics partners, to improve accuracy and targeting
- Setting local reduction targets: as you will read on to see, Haymarket is setting reduction targets globally for its energy and waste, but it is also important to have clear local commitments, to ensure action is underway on the ground for various business functions and divisions. Employees are also encouraged to include carbon considerations in procurement briefs and commercial negotiations
- Lower‑carbon print choices: where print remains essential, we will select lower‑emission paper stocks and production methods, and pressure‑test print volumes so that every copy printed is needed and used
- Reducing high‑impact travel: we continue to be strict on air travel controls and encourage rail or virtual alternatives
- Prioritise sustainable suppliers: we favour venues, printers, and partners that use renewable energy and have clear emissions reduction targets in place

Sukie Chima, Senior Business Development Manager, Business Royal Lancaster Hotel: “Haymarket’s global Impact strategy, aligned with key UN Sustainable Development Goals, sets a high benchmark for responsible media and content. Their dedication to Climate Action, Gender Equality, and Quality Education resonates deeply with our own mission at The Royal Lancaster London to deliver exceptional hospitality while reducing our environmental footprint.
“We’re proud to stand alongside Haymarket as a like-minded partner, using our platforms to drive meaningful change. Through collaborative action and continued dialogue, we can shape a future where purpose-led business becomes the norm, not the exception.”
Sustainability in events
Over the past 12 months, we have made significant investments to increase the number of events certified under our ISO 20121 Sustainable Event Management System (SEMS). This has included training more members of our live events team and expanding the measurement of emissions from events using isla’s carbon measurement platform, TRACE.
2023/24 performance: Last year, we measured and reported on 38 live events using isla’s TRACE tool, exceeding the target of 25 events set by our Environmental Policy. We also successfully put 30 live events through our ISO 20121 SEMS process, more than doubling the requirement of 12.
2024/25 performance: This year, we measured and reported on 32 live events using TRACE, surpassing the revised target of 30 events. In addition, we successfully delivered 30 live events through our ISO 20121 SEMS process, exceeding the requirement of 29.

Sandie Pears, Group Director, membership at Wonderly, said: I'm delighted to see such strong engagement and action across our events teams with our ISO Sustainable Event Management System. This is now embedded into the working process of our event operations and wider event delivery teams - it makes me very proud to demonstrate to our clients how we are continuing to exceed targets and contribute to wider Haymarket Impact commitments.
The team also underwent its first ISO 20121 surveillance audit to ensure compliance with both the standard and the organisation’s own SEMS requirements. This audit included a detailed review of the management system as well as a live observation at the Agency of the Year Awards 2024. It was noted that our focus on sustainability and positive impact was clearly demonstrated throughout the audit.
During the assessment, the events team successfully showcased that its practices align with this strategy. Strengths highlighted during the audit included: a robust event planning process; effective communications with suppliers and a clear understanding of key sustainability issues, risks and opportunities.
The auditor concluded by stating they were “pleased to recommend continued certification to ISO 20121”, and further noted, “I would like to extend my gratitude to all audit participants for their collaboration and transparency, which greatly facilitated the smooth and timely execution of the audit.”
Looking to the next 12 months, our live events team is targeting to put 55% of all Haymarket’s UK events through TRACE and under the ISO 20121 standard.

Éamon Magorrian, Senior Climate Strategy Advisor, Normative, said: “At Normative, we're proud of the impactful partnership we've forged with Haymarket Media Group.
Together, we've embarked on a comprehensive journey to measure and reduce their organisational carbon footprint across their global operations. Haymarket's proactive approach and the dedication of their stakeholders have been instrumental in establishing a complete and auditable baseline across all relevant Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
“Beyond just measurement, Haymarket has actively embraced strategies for reduction. We've worked together to engage employees internally, empowering them to participate in the climate journey, and have begun involving their value chain to collect more primary data from suppliers. Ongoing efforts to establish credible and achievable science-based targets further underscore their deep commitment to tangible climate action. We're incredibly proud to witness the significant progress Haymarket has made on their sustainability journey."
Alex Softley, Director of Marketing & Communications at isla, said: Working with Haymarket Media Group continues to be a pleasure - they have now measured over 100 of their events using our TRACE platform! It's clear their energy and enthusiasm for embedding sustainability in events is matched by a commitment to measurable action. From reducing carbon footprints to increasing resource efficiency and tracking progress against clear targets, they’re setting the standard for how large-scale events can be delivered responsibly, reducing environmental impact, while engaging stakeholders and driving positive change across the industry.
Sustainability in tech
Our technology teams around the world continue to prioritise sustainable practices. We have actioned our global e-waste policy, committing to responsible e-waste management across all regions. This includes the safe disposal and recycling of all electronic equipment, with the aim of achieving 100% compliance.
In the US, we applied standardised energy settings to end-user devices, tightening sleep mode timing by 25% to 87%. Additional printers have also been removed from the environment as part of e-waste reduction efforts.
The lifespan of IT equipment is also extended to further reduce waste. For example in the UK, we have commenced a laptop replacement programme with a target average replacement cycle of 4.8 years, recognising that the majority of a laptop’s carbon footprint is generated during manufacturing and distribution.
The UK held another successful Digital Cleanup Week in recognition of World Cleanup Day. Over 130 employees participated, collectively reducing Google data usage by 3.4 terabytes - equivalent to deleting approximately 400,000 photos and saving around 7 tons of CO2. This is roughly the amount absorbed by 680 trees in a year. 15 individuals cleared over 90% of their data and the top 10 each eliminated more than 80GB.
Gary Charlton, Head of Procurement, Haymarket Media Group: “The past year has seen significant positive changes to how we are meeting our environmental commitments around the world. From how we measure the sustainability approach of our material suppliers, to continuing to learn more about how we can produce an accurate, transparent measurement of our global emissions. It has been a pleasure to be a part of these changes, and to see the hard work of the various teams - from global tech teams changing and updating infrastructure, sustainability being part of the procurement process, and teams actively making choices to reduce our environmental impact.”
